Tentative Agreement Ends Dockworker Strike

October 05, 2024

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) have reached a tentative agreement, ending a three-day strike that affected major East and Gulf Coast ports. The deal extends the existing contract until January 15, 2025 including a significant 61% pay raise for dockworkers. This resolution follows President Biden’s support for the union, urging employers to negotiate in good faith.

The strike highlighted wider concerns regarding U.S. port efficiency and the impact of foreign shipping companies on global shipping rates. While the pay raise is a big step forward, solving the underlying issues will need significant investment in infrastructure. As operations get back to normal, increasing port productivity will be important, especially with the holiday season around the corner.
