According to the latest American Trucking Associations’ Driver Compensation Study, driver wages are rising despite ongoing pressure in the freight market. In 2023, truckload drivers earned up to 10% more than previous years reaching the median of $76,420 annually. Meanwhile, local LTL drivers earn $80,680 and linehaul LTL drivers make $94,525. Leased independent contractors are earning a median of $186,016, and private carrier drivers reach $95,114, seeing a 12% increase in compensation. This increase shows a shift towards experienced drivers with higher tenure bonuses whilst sign-on bonuses have decreased. The recent survey confirms that many drivers expect their earnings to increase or remain steady this year.
